Off 04:48
glass after glass is erupting at the beer tap / tumblers on the trace / of them beads of sweat / that streak and stop / across the fevered faces / raptured in the sound of maniacal noise / lips soaked in this fuel / burn their secrets / burn / there lies everything that's fragile and carefully placed / dashed to glisten in the flickering flame / that expires / by the dimming glow / were you more able to feel / having risked all this / all that you could not bear to lose / she got a mind like a cuneiform mystery message / coming down from the stars up above / where the angles try / to make a human life / come closer to the ways that her words describe / opened up eyes / to a burning bright / mind moving too fast / making pictures / waking up the memory of something / you cannot replace / unforgotten in the look of an eye / that expires / by the dimming glow / were you more able to feel / having risked all this / all that you could not bear to lose
2.
Dry Teeth 05:29
all my dry teeth / dry teeth are narrow / as I bite into the apple of my eyes / emooyee please don't go / all my dry teeth are narrow / as I bite into the apple of my eyes / and the wily alligator / smiling crocodile / and the lazy armadillo / they been chasing me for miles / 'cause I got wild cats in my kitchen / pepper in my stew / and I been cooking up my tongue / now it's creeping into you / I'm creeping cold like a tree root / like old locomotion / where the river runs deep / the weeds grow high / I feel like a firefly / spattered on a windshield / got the glowing green guts spilling from my head / I feel like that poor boy / working in the corn fields / breaking his back for the dreams of the things / that he never had / with the pollen sticking to his sweat / the fever sun begins to set / the cricket and the earthworm dig their beds / in my body and my soul / in my body / and my soul / emooyee please don't go / eudemonia please don't go / all my dry teeth are narrow / as I bite into the apple of my eyes
3.
Swim 07:09
these words / these words beg / these words beg your body to swim / to kick and to paw / for the broken light / these words / these words beg / these words beg your body to swim / to kick and to paw / for the broken light / when everywhere everyone is holding up the mirror to / your new dance / your new / these words / these words hold on / to the broken pieces of siren songs / washed up on the shore / where everyone's losing / these words / these words refuse / refuse to capture the tragic beauty of / the once more seduced / once more seducing / when everywhere everyone is holding up the mirror to / your new dance / your new
4.
Calling Out 05:39
calling out I'm calling out / from this lonesome place / calling for that / holy dove to pour out her grace / calling out calling out / I'm calling out / I'm calling / into the space / your words kept awake / I'm calling out / I'm calling / before the autumn leaves and pouring rain / go washing down the drain / internecine flowers these fences keep / until the gardens sleep / calling out calling out / I'm calling out / I'm calling / into the space / your words kept awake / I'm calling out / I'm calling / sunlight symbols are on the ceiling / and postcard angels in drugstores peering from covered bridge / aw the covered bridge / oh overflow / we did not know / I jumped that fence and I tore my clothes / trying for that home / find our way back home / to where the sunlight symbols are on the ceiling / and postcard angels in drugstores peering from covered bridge / aw the covered bridge / calling out I'm calling out / from this lonesome place / calling for that / holy dove to pour out her grace / calling out calling out / I'm calling out / I'm calling / into the space / your words kept awake / I'm calling out / I'm calling
5.
Clairvoyance 03:34
by clandestiney / but there she was / lying next to me / in the middle of / no electricity and swirling winds / open up the door / she let me in / unveiled secrecy / by candle light / holding holding / and shining bright / my eccentricity / she did not judge / every puzzle piece / fit like a glove / oh I had a moment / of clairvoyance / I had a moment / those dreams all were weaving / I had a moment / of clairvoyance / I had a moment / but now it's gone
6.
Cicada 04:07
it's a cipher and a cicada that's waiting for you / aw their comin' on through now / it's a cipher and a cicada that's waiting for you / aw their comin' on through / in the summertime season buzz in the bushes and trees / you hear but cannot see / it's a cipher and a cicada that's waiting for me / aw come in on and see / it's a cipher and a cicada that's waiting for you / aw their comin' on through / and the suicide lies of a phaedra can wake you up to / that realization blue / that no summa cum laude praises can save you from doin' / exactly what they made you / when the cipher and the cicada come calling for you / ain't nothin' you can do / once they put that hold on your soul they don't ever let go / and you wish you never sold them / all the new cut keys to your kingdom that never came true / and no matter what you do boy / you can never go back to the way that it was when it was / back to the way it was / when the cipher and the cicada first laid eyes on you
7.
Halloween 03:45
florescent light in a hospital room / darkness and light split the face of the moon / like in the beginning / like in the end / 365 times in a second / halloween is come / and the knot slips undone / collapsing shades of a colorless day / condensing droplets of clouds turning grey / languages fusing / symbols erase / no way to speak of the spirits that you face / halloween is come / and the knot slips undone / babylon in your brain / colors colliding / cycling cylinders / consciousness sliding / difference falls apart / one thing's the same as everything / abyssmal equivocating / fusing confusing / erased misplace / flayed unfamiliar fading / florescent light in a hospital room / darkness and light split the face of the moon / light is a particle / light is a wave / turned into energy / sanity to save
8.
there were miles of silence to fill / with the tangents of our minds / that climbed slowly up the walls / up to the corners / up to the ceiling / I could feel with the hair on my arms / christmas light glowed / from all directions / and quiet as snowflakes / whispers drift across / and the heat came on in your room / and noisily blew the serious away I had never been there before / I could not find my way in that land / but you reached out / with your guiding hand / and you helped me across the divide / and a siren cut through the night / and the fire engine groaned / and the walls flashed with red light / the universe was still / a timeless vacuum / we looked too long / and our stares shifted black and white / I had never been there before / I could not find my way in that land / but you reached out / with your guiding hand / and you helped me across the divide
9.
a rain so soft fell on the ground / and on a newborn baby head / coo and laugh a brand new language / I loved you under raindrop rooftops / coo and laugh a brand new language / we have no longer access to the world we knew before / right now I can barely speak / and I'm shaken to the core / can't catch the words to sooth these things / that writhe and try to leap into eternity direct / dull and shapeless wail
10.
Loom 06:14
suntan smell / salt is in the air / sleeping with her shoulders bare / open lips / are flowers in full bloom / in the kitchen memories loom / try to change her / don't try to change her / she's not gonna change her mind / hail stones fell / the day I packed my things / down the street a church bell rings / all was said / and everything was done / fly into the sinking sun / try to change her / don't try to change her / 'cause she's not gonna change her mind

about

“Tavares's voice [floats] just above this guitar, filled with hope and gratitude and yet retaining a beautiful melancholy tone. One is reminded a bit of Jeff Buckley, but probably even more of his father Tim, especially when Tavares sneaks his voice into falsetto range. But there is also a drive to these songs that is rare in anything from either of the Buckleys and instead recalls the work of Sam Beame (Iron & Wine) ... Many people are familiar with Gabriel Tavares for his work in Plastic Nebraska, the Thins, and most recently, with Powder the Moon, a duo with Lora Pendleton. Tavares has just issued a new solo album Live at CBGB's 313 Gallery, and it may be the most sustained and compelling display of his distinctive guitar playing on record. He has a percussive style that sounds influenced by Middle Eastern and North African music, and in the seven tracks recorded at CBGB's he combines an aggressive attack with live looping to produce compelling versions of songs from Cipher, his first solo album and songs that I haven't heard before.”
— Bill Chaisson, Ithaca Times

December 5, 2005, I rented a car and drove to New York City to play one of the final shows CBGB's would host. My son was a month away from turning one year old and watched some of the live video feed with his Mom on the computer. I had the pleasure of sharing the night with a duo form of a band called Faith, featuring Felice Rosser and Naotaka Hakamada who would later perform in the CBGB's Festival in October years later. Nao recorded my set on this night. You can hear the punk bands raging through the walls in the main room. Track one opens with the greeting of a surprise guest who drove from upstate NY to be there for me. The last three songs on the record were recorded live at Juna's in Ithaca, NY *recorded by REP Studio's Jeff Coleman on August 23, 2003. Track 9 features my debut and only live performance on a Sarod, an Indian instrument related to the Sitar. All tracks were performed live--vocals, guitar and live loops (no canned percussion). The record was mastered by Matthew Saccuccimorano. The cover photo was taken live at the show by Kazumi Hakamada, Nao's wife. All purchases are greatly appreciated and go toward the release of this material on CD. Thanks for listenin'.
